Amy Barnett-Hunt aged 10 writes
'Dear Hooky Players. Thank you so much for the pantomime you put on for us. It was much appreciated.
We all loved it, especially when you ran into the audience and sat on laps! The costumes were really eye-catching! Everyone thought they were really realistic!
The acting was brill! The music was great, and everything was fantastic!
It really made our day! Loads of thanks.'

HOOKY PLAYERS

After the huge success of the New Year production, the next Hooky Players presentation will be Blithe Spirit, in June. The cast has been assembled and includes Kevin Hope, Pam Horne, Brian Rider, Sheila Rider, Julie Warren, Hilary Wiseman and Carol Housby Blithe Spirit is billed as an improbable farce and is written by Noel Coward. Rehearsals are now underway and the cast is having a great time with the wonderful plot. The action takes place in the 1940's and in order to re-create a 1940's drawing/living room, if anyone has any 'period furniture' which we could use, perhaps you would let me know. I promise that we will look after anything which is lent to us. Look out for further details of the production, as June approaches.

FRIENDS OF HOOK NORTON SCHOOL,
YOU WILL GO TO THE BALL!

Calling all Cinderellas and fun-lovers generally. With the balmy nights of summer fast approaching make a date in your diary for Saturday 28th June. Come to a fabulous Summer Ball, jointly organised by the school and St Peter's Church to mark the 10th anniversary of the primary school's new building. The ball will be held in the evening in a marquee on the school field and profits will be divided between the school and St Peters (with 10 per cent of the Church's share being donated to The Children's Society). Tickets are £40 each, available from Sheila Rider or Hazel Hope at the school office. It would be preferable if tickets were sold in blocks of ten for a table, but smaller bookings can be accepted. Anyone wishing to help with organising the Ball should contact the school office or Mrs Collins at St Peter's.
Now all you chocolate hoarders, can you find something tasty for the school's Chocolate Tombola? Will you sacrifice your last Rolo? As usual on the last day of term (11th April), children will have the chance to buy raffle tickets and win some lovely chocolate. The event is hugely popular and any chocolate donations will be gratefully accepted at the school office from 7th April. Meanwhile, look out for the results of the Chocolate Quiz: 30 anagrams of different chocolate snacks for you to decipher and win some tasty prizes. Make sure your entries are back at school by 1st April. Results by the end of term.
Also look out for information on the latest of our ever-popular Quiz Night that will be held on 17th May.
And don't forget to drop your old printer cartridges into the school office for recycling. Each HP/Lexmark/Canon cartridge can earn credit of 30p to £2.10 at PC World and so enhance our computer suite. Every little helps.

& St Peter's Church, Hook Norton
'Events in a Tent'
As part of the Primary School's 10-year celebrations, a number of activities are being organised at the end of June in a marquee in the school grounds. Events, which you are warmly invited to participate in, are detailed below.

Saturday 28 June: Summer Ball
A ticket-only joint School/Church event.
Tables of 10/tickets available from Sheila Rider.

Sunday 29 June: Rock Gospel Service
Worship with live band – starts 6.30pm

Monday 30 June: School Reunion/Display Evening
The Local History Society are joining the School with displays and memorabilia of education past and present - past pupils, parents and staff are invited to drop in between 6pm and 9pm to have a look round - the Friends of Hook Norton School will be serving refreshments during the evening, providing an ideal opportunity to get together with old friends!

(The Local History Group have asked for help in gathering together memorabilia/information – past playground games & pastimes, remembered group games (including singing ones), old photos of school occasions and school photographs, toys, e.g. whips & tops, five stones, hoops, marbles, information about dame and private schools. All items loaned will be carefully logged and returned as soon as possible).

HOOK NORTON 'SCRATCH' REQUIEM
Following the success of the 'scratch' Messiah in September 2001, we have decided to stage a similar event in June this year. The programme will be Mozart's Requiem and Handel's Coronation Anthem 'Zadok the Priest'. The 'scratch' weekend will take place on the 7th and 8th of June 2003. The format is the same; all day rehearsals on Saturday the 7th at the Primary School, and a rehearsal and performance on Sunday the 8th in St. Peter's Church.
Shauni McGregor has kindly agreed to act as musical director for the weekend and we will be accompanied by the Cherwell Chamber Orchestra. This is an opportunity for those of all abilities who don't have the opportunity to sing very often to get together and enjoy singing some of the finest choral music ever written - don't be bashful, come and join us for what is certain to be a fun weekend.
The weekend will cost £15 (£5 for those of school age) including lunch on the Saturday. If you are interested please contact Emma Callery for a form. (emma@callery.demon.co.uk)

HOOK NORTON FILM SOCIETY
First: My sincere apologies for the non-appearance of our Film Society Notes in the last issue. If anyone should know about deadlines, it should be myself, having spent all my working life meeting them. However, this time Homer nodded, the copy was too late, and my face was heavily plastered with egg. So sorry.
That apart, our current season continues its triumphant advance. Two films to go now before chairman Harry Smith and his battery of film buffs get down to the quest for the next thirteen movies to take us through autumn, winter and early spring for our 23rd season.
And don't be surprised if, for the Society's 25th season, Hooky stages its very own Film Festival! It's a possibility.

HOOK NORTON BRASS BAND
Band rehearsals have been very well attended and, as usual, used to full extent with hard practising in readiness for coming events. In February a recording session took place, the first of several needed in order to cut a CD. Jason Glynn was the recording technician who came along with all the necessary equipment at the request of the M.D. The finished product will not be available for some time yet and should prove interesting.
Bookings are coming in nicely for the "Friends" concert being held on 6th April at 7pm in St Peter's Church, Hook Norton. Please note the date in your diaries as well as 17th May, when Hook Norton and Oxford Bands will be jointly in concert arranged by and in aid of Victim Support. This will take place in St Mary's Church, Banbury. More details to follow.
The AGM will have taken place by the time this is read, the results of which will be reported upon in the next newsletter.
Jenny Glynn

STEEPLE ASTON COPE EXHIBITION
The Steeple Aston Cope is coming home from the Victoria and Albert Museum to Steeple Aston for just one weekend. This unique piece of medieval embroidery was made for a very senior member of the clergy to wear on important occasions. It was probably created in a London workshop during the early years of the l4th Century; the 'great period' of English medieval embroidery (Opus Anglicanum) and is one of the finest examples of its kind.
Opening Times: Saturday 26th April 10.00-6.00pm and Sunday 27th April 10.00-5.30pm
Cost: £5 for adults £1 for children aged 6-18: Free for children aged 5 and under.
Refreshments: Coffee, tea, soup and snacks will be available in the Village Hall
All the proceeds from the Cope Exhibition and related events will go towards the Steeple Aston Church Restoration and Improvements Appeal.
For more information regarding the exhibition, talks by Linda Woolley, curator at the Victoria and Albert Museum and a specially commissioned mystery play based on the Cope, please contact the chairman, David Armitage or Edwina Kinch (email kinch@breathemail.net)
