CARRY ON LEARNING
We've had a great start! Despite the chilly weather, Barbara Hicks our village Museum Curator shared many reminiscences with the aid of artefacts at our first meeting. Twenty of us managed to cross the ice to enjoy that morning. Another chilly day, but an equally good turnout greeted Tony Butterfield who showed us some beautiful slides to illustrate his talk about the History of the Theatre.
This month, no doubt we are all looking forward to another visit from Wendy Hilary of the Elgar Society. Do come and join us on any of the following days:

  1. 29th April - Tooley's Boatyard with Matthew Armitage
  2. 29th May A - Travelling Embroiderer Carole Fryer
Also, on 24th June, we will have another visit from Barbara Hicks with some more village treasures.
All our meetings begin at 10.30 am in the Library with coffee or tea and last for just 1 hour.

JOURNEY'S END BY R. C. SHERRIFF

Bloxham Amateur Theatrical Society are putting on a production of Journey's End at the Warriner School Drama Studio on the 8th, 9th and 10th of April.

Set in the trenches of the 1st World War, this classic play has just completed a successful West End run at the Comedy Theatre to coincide with the 90th anniversary of the start of WW1 and the 60th anniversary of the D-Day landings.

The play tells the story of Captain Stanhope and a new officer arriving straight from school. To Stanhope's horror, not only did he know the new officer from when he was at school, but also the new officer happens to be the younger brother of Stanhope's fiancée.

Whilst the play covers a serious subject sensitively, it also contains many strong characters and humorous moments. It has deservedly become the definitive WW1 play and will be known to many as a standard text at school.

Tickets, price £6, from Bloxham Post Office or Homecraft, Bloxham.
Further details can be had from Keith or Diane Disney.

HOOK NORTON FESTIVAL OF MUSIC
Click for larger image The first Hook Norton Festival of Music was a success way beyond our expectations. From the first note we were treated to quality music all with a local flavour, from Jazz to Rock, through Folk and Pop, we had it all. The event ran from 1pm until 9pm with people coming and going all day, it was at times getting near to a capacity crowd. Special thanks must go to Gloria and the Village Shop for keeping all our musicians full of sandwiches, and One Man Band in Banbury for loan of equipment. Thanks to all who supported the raffle, and to everyone who helped on the day. A big thanks to all the artists who gave their performances free of charge and played with enthusiasm and skill. We have a large number of photographs taken at the event and in a few weeks, we will have a special CD available with all the photos on it. Full details of how to buy your copy will be on the web site www.hook-norton.org.uk/music
Next years festival will be on the 26th of February 2005.

HOOK NORTON BRASS BAND
The first weeks of a new year allow the band to concentrate on practising new music in readiness for the engagements that will follow in future months.

The annual concert in appreciation of the "friends" of the band will be held on 28th March at 7pm in St Peter's Church, Hook Norton and M.D. Ron Glynn is planning an exciting programme. Entitled "Lights, Camera, Action", the music will be themed on films of the big screen, which depict the dramas of life that touch every one of us. We hope that a good many "friends," old and new, will be there to enjoy our musical offerings in the warm and congenial atmosphere that it always is. Band bookings are now coming in quite steadily for later dates in the year so watch out for further details.
The M.D. is still looking for cornet players of a good standard and would be pleased to hear from anyone fitting this bill. He can be contacted on 01295 252395.
