North Cotswold Chamber Choir

The North Cotswold Chamber Choir proudly announces its most eagerly anticipated concert of the season; an authentic performance of Monteverdi's sacred masterpiece, the Vespers of the Blessed Virgin of 1610. This sumptuous work, written shortly before Monteverdi was appointed Meastro di Capella at St Mark's, Venice, is not just full of opulence and invention (though there is plenty of both). Monteverdi composed this masterpiece at a time when the serene polyphonic style of the Renaissance was giving way to the more operatic and emotionally charged writing of the early baroque era.

Joining forces with the choir and conductor Jonathan Leanard will be the Cotswold Baroque Players, and a roster of acclaimed soloists including Rebecca Outram, founderr member of the Cardinall's Music and regular soloist with The Sixteen and the Gabriell Consort.

MUSIC AT THE CROSSROADS 2005

Saturday July 2nd

is the date for this years Music at the Crossroads event – so put it in the diary!
Same field (behind the Gate Hangs High), same time (1.30-11.30pm).

Building on last year's excellent day where over £5,500 was raised for local groups and Leukaemia research, planning is well underway for this year's event.

Music at the Crossroads 2005 will include all the best elements of previous years (for newcomers or those who have forgotten, we mean great music covering all tastes/styles, children's entertainment, food stalls, beer tent, free bus service to/from the village and a relaxed fun day) with a few new ideas - a second acoustic marquee for smaller bands, more children's activities and great weather (we are hopeful!)

The headline band and final line up is being confirmed in the next few weeks but there will be a mix of great local bands, new bands and some M@C favourites – more news in the next Newsletter.

So if anyone has any suggestions/ideas for any of the following, now is a good time to have your say and we would welcome your views. Remember the event is for the village and to help benefit the village community and groups.
Maybe you have ideas for:

We are particularly looking for possible new sponsors and more raffle prizes – maybe:

So tell your friends/family and keep the date free for a fun day.

Please send any ideas / suggestions to HNCA via

HOOK NORTON VILLAGE MUSEUM
Do you know……
......
anything about William & Adelaide Spencer who lived in Queen Street in 1914. Of particular interest is their granddaughter Doris Bettie (born in 1911) who may have stayed with them for a while? or……
……the forwarding address of Mr Geare who left the village a few years ago?
Do you have…..any spare copies of the publication Hooky Schooldays compiled by students of the primary school to celebrate its ten years in the new building in Sibford Road?
We also need to know who the kind person was who handed in two tapes of Radio Oxford's visit to Hook Norton in 1986, also who the lady was who recently passed on information about the Welcome Club extracted from an old diary.
If you can shed light on any of theses queries please ring Barbara Hicks or Pat Summerell (Joint Curators and Archivists Hook Norton Village Museum)

HOOKY PLAYERS
The AGM of the above group took place at The Sun on Monday 21st February 2005.
It was well attended by 26 members and the following officers were all re-elected:- President/Chairman - Brian Rider; Vice Chairman – Keith Disney; Secretary - David McGill; Treasurer - John Pickering. All committee members were re-elected with the addition of Neil Smith.
After the decision to withdraw 'Diplomatic Baggage', due to technical reasons for the summer production, a vote followed for a replacement. 'A Tomb With a View' to be directed by Keith Disney was the final outcome. The play will be performed in September instead of the usual June presentation.
A free children's' dance and drama workshop will begin on 17th March at the Baptist's Hall between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. This to be held every two weeks on a Thursday evening. Chloe Brown will supervise the dancing between 6 – 7 p.m. and Jeannie Brown and Brian Rider the drama from 7 - 8 p.m. It is hoped to start play readings from April onwards to keep members together. New members always welcome.
Brian Rider

A TOMB WITH A VIEW
No, not a prime location in St Peter's churchyard, but the title of the Hooky Players September production with performances on Thursday to Saturday 15th, 16th & 17th September 2005.
A Tomb with a View was written by Norman Robbins and is set in the present time. It is an unusual and very funny comedy thriller for 4 male and 6 female characters. Lucian Tomb assumes the role of head of the household on the death of father Septimus Tomb and everyone wants to get their hands on the missing family fortune. The Tomb family are all eccentrics (plenty of scope to develop the characters) and the pace is fast but the missing millions are not discovered until …, well that would give the game away.
Auditions will take place in May and we hope to start rehearsing in June. Details will be circulated to members nearer the time, but new members are always welcome on the team either on stage or providing the very necessary back stage support.
We look forward to seeing you in the summer. Further details are available from either
Keith Disney (Director) (keith.disney@gkndriveline.com)
or Brian Ryder (President)
