NEW NOVEL BY LOCAL AUTHOR

Available nationwide in bookshops - and the village stores too - is Brian Rider's newest novel

EDGE OF TOMORROW.

The book, which is Brian's ninth, is very different to any of his other novels. Widely researched in Borneo, it could well be described as a cliff-hanger involving three young ladies. Local interest is doubled by the appearance of Jane Fowler on the cover. Jane depicts one of the characters, one Paula Carlisle. A superb holiday read. Don't leave home without it!
Worth every penny of the purchase price of £9-99.

HOOKY PLAYERS
Following the group's successful production of Blithe Spirit in June, the Players will be staging - for one night only - an Olde Tyme Music Hall/Review at 7.30 p.m. on Saturday 27 September this year. The show will consist of a number of varied acts by both members and non-members of the Players. It will be compered by Mr. John Wheatley, and refreshments will be available. Tickets will be £5 with concessions at £3 on a 'first come, first served' basis. (Date for box office to be announced later). The best 'Olde Tyme' costume in the audience will receive a bottle of champagne for their efforts. Should you wish to perform on the bill, then contact Brian Rider now. If you can sing, act, recite, juggle, dance or do anything that you think will be entertaining step forward NOW.
In the last week of January 2004, we will be staging a production of the pantomime 'The Pied Piper'. Children will be needed and auditions for adults and children alike will take place around September/October. The pantomime will be directed by Brian Rider with Wendy Green as musical director and Polly Rose as choreographer. This is a traditional type of show with the usual dame, principal boy and baddies in abundance. Written by Peter Webster, it is certainly one of the best scripts around and will have something for adults and children alike. (More details later). Hooky Players welcome new members, both young and old. You do not have to be an actor or actress, as we always need backstage personnel who are vitally important to us.
On a social note the Hooky Players annual BBQ, this year fr members will be in the garden of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Terry on 3 August, where we hope to see as many of our group as possible. During the summer, we meet informally on the first Thursday of each month for a get-together in The Sun from 8 p.m. onwards. Come along and join us, especially if you would like to learn more about the Hooky Players.

P.S .If anyone has a wardrobe, cupboard or chest of drawers surplus to their requirements and would like to donate it to the Hooky Players, please phone me and we will be pleased to arrange its collection.

HOOK NORTON BRASS BAND
Click for a large version!
The band has been in action recently, performing at Broughton Church Fete on 14th June. The event took place on the lawns of Broughton Castle on a sizzling hot afternoon. The wonderful surroundings and the glorious weather drew the crowds and the stalls bustled with customers and good business. The band played in two spots, performing a varied selection of music to suit all tastes which attracted applause and complimentary remarks. Broughton Fete had all the qualities of a quintessential English summer afternoon, where people happily whiled away their time in very pleasurable circumstances. The next engagement will be on Sunday 13th July when the band will bring Bodicote Festival Weekend to a close, playing for a Songs of Praise Service in a giant marquee on the Kingsfield in Whitepost Road, Bodicote, at 5.30pm. All are welcome to this event, but need to bring their own chairs or rugs to sit on.

HOOK NORTON CHARITABLE ASSOCIATION
Music at the Crossroads on 5th July was great success and…….. DRY. Finally, we got a fine weekend to compliment the great mix of music and entertainment. Behind any event, there are a host of people – too many to name - who help in all sorts of ways. HNCA thanks everyone involved.
One of the prime reasons for holding this and other events throughout the year is to raise monies for charities and local organisations. Therefore, if you represent an organisation or charity which you feel could benefit, we ask you to write to the address below briefly outlining the reasons for the request. Please ensure that all donation requests reach us by Friday 5th September.
Finally, the HNCA AGM will take place on 8th October 2003 in the Brewery Visitors Centre at 8pm.If you wish to get involved in any way or have a view, please come along.

DEREK ISLAND DISKS
Many thanks to everyone who helped make the event on June 14th such a fun evening. Apologies at not being able to play all of the records requested, but perhaps next time…
64 attended and 60 raffle tickets were sold. After covering costs we have been able to donate £110 to the Meningitis Trust and £110 to CLIC – (Cancer and Leukaemia in Children)
The raffle, kindly donated by Penny Moore, was won by David McGill who will soon be enjoying a rally driving day.
We would also like to thank Richard and his team at The Sun for their kind hospitality
