HOOKY PLAYERS
Rehearsals for the Group's first production 'Murdered to Death' are now coming together well. This immensely funny comedy has a cast of ten (six ladies and four men) - all local people. The play, which was a great success in the West End is written by the very talented Peter Gordon and he has now written a sequel to it.
The Players are performing the show on the evenings of Saturday 9th June and Sunday 10th June and demand for tickets is expected to be brisk. These can be obtained from the producer Brian Rider, Polly Rose, Claire Curtis or indeed, from any member of the cast.
Although some will be available on the door of the Memorial Hall on the night, booking in advance is the only sure way to secure a seat. A really entertaining evening with lots of laughs - be sure not to miss it.

Brian Rider - Producer

MARK DAMISCH IN CONCERT
On Thursday 2nd August at 7.45pm in St Peter's Church , Hook Norton, American pianist Mark Damisch will be giving a Concert in aid of the Tower Appeal. In his late teens, Mark played a series of classical concerts around the world in order to raise money for charitable causes and over the past twenty five years he has undertaken many similar tours. Last summer he toured Europe, playing concerts in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. This summer he is giving charity performances in England, Scotland and Ireland. The reason for his coming back to Hook Norton is that his mother's family originally came from this village.
Mark works as an attorney in Chicago and is currently Mayor of Northbrook Village. He is married to Patty and they have three children, all of whom are musical!
His concert will include pieces by Bartok, Chopin and Samuel Barber; possibly with Scott Joplin's 'Maple Leaf Rag' as an encore. The evening offers a superb classical piano concert with an exciting hint of 'All American Budweiser and Popcorn'! Tickets £7 (concessions £5) Contact John Acreman for details.

MESSIAH FROM SCRATCH WEEKEND
Plans are now well under way for the Messiah from Scratch Weekend: 29-30 September . This is a fundraising event for St Peter¹s Church Tower Appeal and the cost is £15 for adults and £5 for children, which includes lunch on the Saturday. We have lined up a conductor, soloists, orchestra, the school for rehearsals and the church for the grand performance. Now we need a choir. You will find leaflets all around the village with details, so fill one in and get it to Emma Callery or Simon Mead as soon as possible. Alternatively, just give us a ring and we'll send you the information. Seats are limited to 200 and they are starting to fill up so hurry, hurry, hurry for what promises to be a rousing event.

VIDEO REVIEW
As well as books, Hook Norton library has a wide range of videos to hire for the week. If you have seen a video from the library that you think others might enjoy please send in a short review.
Gladiator - Certificate 15 £3 for one week's hire
A good old-fashioned Hollywood epic, providing gainful employment for the manufacturers of Oscars and hordes of film extras. Russell Crowe as a Roman general forced to become a gladiator, follows a traditional Hollywood role of lone noble hero pitted against a corrupt and evil empire, this time Roman not Intergalactic. There are great costumes and magnificent set pieces. The blurb on the video states 'Violence frequent, strong, historical', suitable for iron-stomached 15 year olds but not me. I had to watch this one in two parts - only viewing the ending when accompanied by another adult.

HOOK NORTON BRASS BAND
The Band AGM on 20th March was very well attended. Steve Ashby gave his last report as Chairman, stepping down after six years. He spoke of changes that he's seen during that time, from the worry and stress of hanging on by a thread when the Band was at an all time low and very nearly ceased to exist. The change in the Band's fortune came about when Jason Glynn came back to the area from Cornwall and started to take rehearsals, eventually agreeing to accept the post as Musical Director four years ago, followed by his father, Ron Glynn, who assisted him as Bandmaster. This resulted in a rapid increase in membership and the formation of a proper Training Band which also rapidly expanded.
The setting up of the Band's Charitable status was a satisfactory achievement, raising our ability to raise funds for ourselves. Steve said he'd enjoyed his time as Chairman, despite the stress in the past and was proud to be leaving his post at a time when the band was stable and successful, with a hard working committee.
It was reported that Jason was standing down as MD due to his busy lifestyle. He is a high class player and conductor, greatly in demand in the brass band world, contesting very much his ' au faut' , both playing and conducting. Ron Glynn will take over fully the musical leadership of the band although Jason will act as guest conductor on occasions.
The election of officers for the committee saw a few changes, with Annette Coleman as Treasurer, Jenny Cobley as Secretary and Geoff Olssen as Chairman, the rest of the committee remaining. Mike Cobley had stepped in to take responsibility for the end of year accounts from Tony Tinkham and had done a good job, for which we are most grateful.
David Ford, who runs his own business, was unable to continue as Secretary, or as band member, because of work commitments and our thanks go to him for what he's been able to do. Our good wishes go with these people as their paths lead in other directions and we welcome the new committee members in the undertaking of their respective responsibilities.
Ron Glynn presented cups to: Ray Martin for the most committed band member, Leila Bennett for the most improved player and Simon Hughes for most improved player in the training band. The latter, the Glynn Trophy, a new cup given by Ron in respect of the musical influence of both Jason and himself in the training of young musicians.
The Sun Inn, Hook Norton was the venue for a band social evening on April 7th when a group along with family members, met for a game of skittles, followed by a buffet supper. Steve Ashby was the winner, ten year old Richard Coleman runner up and Tim Newbold in third place. They each received an Easter egg as a prize, completing a very enjoyable evening.
The annual 'Friends' concert on May 13th was an occasion looked forward to for many weeks, the first concert of the year. The carefully selected programme to suit all tastes included excerpts from the well-loved classic 'New World Symphony'. There were rousing marches, 'The Astronaut' and 'The Eagle Has Landed' and film themes, 'Out of Africa' and 'Who Wants to live Forever'. Three soloists were featured, Jenny Cobley on horn playing 'Misty', Leila Bennett playing 'Ben' on cornet and Kris Reader played 'Acrobat' on trombone. 'The Bold Gendarmes', a vocal duet, was performed by Paul Roberts and Harry Lord dressed in appropriate apparel accompanied by Jenny.
The Training Band contributed their three numbers just before the interval, the result of patient training by Ron Glynn. His musical abilities and expertise were again featured in another of his compositions, 'Lights, Camera, Action', a selection of TV themes which was not easy to play, but greatly enjoyed by the band. Two pop numbers, one made famous by Elvis Presley, 'You are Always on my Mind' and Lionel Ritchie's 'Endless Love' were also performed. The concert was finally brought to a close by the solemn hymn tune 'Belmont', played at various levels of volume and finally, the beautiful tones of the classical 'Judex'. There were many appreciative comments and the evening was one of enjoyment in the company of friends.
The band's next engagement will be at the wedding of local MP Tony Baldry on May 28th at Bloxham Church and afterwards at the school.
On June 23rd the band will play at Byfield Church at the Songs of Praise Service, 6pm-7pm . On Friday 22nd June , Bodicote village concert , 8pm-10pm and Songs of Praise in Bodicote , 5pm-6pm . We hope to see many of you on these occasions and other forthcoming summer events.

Jenny Glynn
