Click for a large version!
Now in the seventh year, this tremendous annual event in the social calendar provides a great mix of music, featuring special guest artists and the best of local bands. Fine music along with plenty of other attractions and children's entertainment make this the perfect family day out. Held outdoors at Ferris Hill Farm near the crossroads by the Gate Hangs High, this event is renowned for its friendly and relaxed atmosphere. The beer tent serving the famous Hook Norton Ales will be open all day plus there'll be a great selection of food on offer.
All profits go to the Hook Norton Charitable Association. The primary aims of this music event are to provide fantastic entertainment whilst raising as much money as possible for local and national charities, plus the many local organisations that depend upon such donations.
Why change the name to Music at the Crossroads?
Over a period of six years this fantastic event has been known as 'Folk in a Field', but Folk music is only part of the range of popular music on offer. Some people actually do not attend because they have an impression that the music is just 'folk', some have complained that as the event has folk in the title it should feature much more folk. This year, as in previous years, the organisers have gathered a great mix of different styles of rock, blues and folk for Music at the Crossroads to give the audience variety and great entertainment.
Come along and enjoy the 'Hooky' M@C, let's get a capacity crowd and make this an even more amazing and profitable day for our village.

HOOK NORTON BRASS BAND
The AGM took place on 25th March, followed by a rehearsal. Reports from the year showed a pleasing picture of band management, band participation and a healthy balance of finances. Ron Glynn reported that he was pleased with the overall position of the band and the commitment of players. He awarded the Glynn trophy for the training band member who had showed the most improvement during the year to Edward Bolton-King, on percussion. The cup for the most improved player went to Thomas Coleman, on cornet, who Ron considered as having tried hard to become more proficient, taking music lessons and exams. He told him that he still had a long way to go, but his efforts were deserving of the award. Ron presented John Eades with the cup for good bandsmanship, praising him for his consistent service as librarian, which he carries out well. Added to this, John works towards bettering himself musically, taking lessons and practising regularly.
There were some changes to the committee with Geoff Olssen resigning as Chairman and also having to say goodbye as a player. Martin Quartermain was welcomed as the new Chairman, a position which is not new to him. Jenny Cobley wished to resign as Secretary and Eileen Smith took up this post. The rest of the committee will remain.
David Clarke, the Band President, spoke of his pleasure in the band's progress under the present leadership and of his admiration every time he saw the band in action.
The 'Friends' spring concert was held on 6
th April in Hook Norton's beautiful Parish Church, in front of a sizeable audience. Some of the pieces were completely new; such as 'Spirit of the Celts' which had a catchy lilt, building up to a lively dance. In contrast was the haunting 'Schindler's List', which was played with feeling and resulted in many expressing how moving they'd found it. With a prior request for some Frank Sinatra music, a selection made popular again by Robbie Williams, was played. Paul Roberts, singing 'Panis Angelicus' with band accompaniment, performed another piece of music made popular again in recent years.
In memory of a very good friend of the band, Joe Bishop and at the request of his widow, Betty, the band played the 'March Past of the RAF Band'. Joe had served in this particular military service. The evening was brought to a close by the stirring 'Rule Britannia', an appropriate choice with our troops in action in the Middle East at the time.
A party of band members, family and friends travelled to Warwick Arts on 26
th April to see and hear the great Black Dyke Band. What a treat awaited them in an evening of musical excellence. Every piece of music performed to the highest calibre, every performer within this fine virtuoso band a master of his art. Conducted by the famous Nick Childs, the whole concert was brilliantly performed, holding the audience spellbound. Black Dyke has a long history, retaining a high level of respect and achievement and is always at the forefront of the brass band world. It was a great privilege to be in the company of this acclaimed band, the memory of which will last for a very long time.
The joint concert with Oxford Band that was to have taken place on 17
th May had to be cancelled. Oxfordshire Victim Support was organising this event but faced too many problems for it to go ahead at this time. It will perhaps be considered for a date sometime in the future.
The band will be engaged at Broughton Village Fete on 14
th June in the grounds of Broughton Castle, commencing at 2pm. Book the date in your diaries and come and enjoy a summer afternoon with us in a truly wonderful setting.
On 13
th July the band will lead Bodicote's Songs of Praise in King's Field beginning at 5.30pm, to bring the Village Festival Weekend to a close. Everyone welcome.
