HOOK NORTON FILM SOCIETY
By the time you read this, Hook Norton Film Society's 22nd season (what a long time we've been going!) should have got under way with the enchantingly funny “Monsoon Wedding”, a movie which proves that the tensions of that Happy Day are the same whether the bride wears white or a sari.
The next movie, on October 12th will be “Under The Sand”, an elegantly crafted French production with overtones of mystery. Following that on November 2nd will be “Butterfly Tongue”, a fantasy from Spain.
Do join the Society. It's good value at £22 for 12 films. We're a lively crowd and sometimes the pre-film supper can turn in to quite a party. Programme copies, forms and info from the Chairman, Harry Smith

HOOK NORTON BRASS BAND
The final engagement of a busy summer season was Vera Jones' Garden Party on 4th August at "Temple Close", Sibford. Despite torrential rain the day before and a very dull morning on the day, the sun shone beautifully for the event in the afternoon. Tables and chairs were arranged on the terrace for the guests to sit and enjoy a delicious spread whilst the band, seated on a lower level under shade of trees, played a selection of light music. The splendour of the garden, as usual, was an additional pleasure. Ron Glynn, M.D. was delighted to announce to the band the wonderful news that Julie Jakeman, our flugal horn player, had given birth to a bouncing baby boy, Adam. Vera's kind hospitality extended to the band afterwards, with tea and cakes in her kitchen
A lull in band engagements now allows opportunity to prepare for the annual Autumn Concert, in memory of Bill Clarke, which takes place on 20th October at 7.00pm in St Peter's Church, Hook Norton. Also, the Christmas season begins in November with the Katharine House Lights of Love Carol Service on Friday 29th at St. Mary's Church, Banbury. The annual band Carol Concert is on the following day, Saturday 30th at 7.00pm in the Marlborough Road Methodist Church. Book the dates in your diary.
Those dark days of winter seem a long way off at the time of writing, but they will be upon us all too soon.
Jenny Glynn

THE NORTH COTSWOLD CHAMBER CHOIR

returns to Hook Norton on October 12th to perform Sergei Rachmaninov's impassioned and monumental setting of the Russian Orthodox All-Night Vigil. Written in less than two weeks (January/February 1915), Rachmaninov's music is conceived on a vast and spacious scale and was an immediate success when premiered during a tour put on by Rachmaninov to raise money for the war effort.
The North Cotswold Chamber Choir's last concert in Hook Norton was in April this year when they performed Bach's Mass in B Minor. Come and experience what has been described as “some of the most stunningly beautiful choral music ever written.”

Concert details: Date: October 12th 2002 at 7.30pm

Venue: St Peter's Church, Hook Norton

Tickets: from Simon and Jenny Mead, Hicks Lodge, Sibford Road
