Arts & Entertainment

On Saturday 18th October at 2 p.m. in the Memorial Hall
THE BOOSTER CUSHION THEATRE will present
'Big Goldilocks and the Three Bears”
A teddy boy tells us his comical version of the original story, but all goes wrong when Big Goldilocks turns up, bumps into Noah and spoils it all! The show features a very special telescopic book, which extends to over 8' tall. A comical and physical show deep in the woods!

“Philip was excellent with the children…keeping a sparky upbeat atmosphere going and clearly thrilling his young audience”.
Michael Burrell, Chairman of Wisbech Events Forum.

Booster Cushion Theatre works specifically with children to encourage them to take a greater interest in books. The energetic shows are performed simultaneously using voice and mime. Since its formation, Booster has toured to over 200,000 people from Jersey to the Shetland Islands.

Suitable for children aged 4 to 9.
Tickets available from the POST OFFICE or telephone 737129.

Prices: Adults £6.00
  Concessions £4.00

Event organised by Hook Norton Parish Council
through the Cherwell District Council Arts at Large Programme

HOOKY PLAYERS
Following our request for unwanted wardrobes and chests of drawers, in the last newsletter, I am delighted to say we have been amazed by the response and now are proud owners of two of each! We would like to take this opportunity of saying 'thank you' to not only the people we accepted them from, but all the others offered to us as well. The wardrobes and drawers will assist us to store our growing collection of clothes, hats and effects and do away with dustbin bags and cardboard boxes tucked away in different people's cupboards.
By the time you read this, the Olde Tyme Music Hall/Revue will have taken place and we will be into auditions for the Pied Piper pantomime, due to be performed in the last week of January 2004.
The group always welcomes new members, either acting or behind the scenes. So don't be shy. Come forward and join us.
Brian Rider, Chairman

FRIENDS OF HOOK NORTON COMMUNITY LIBRARY
At a well-attended AGM, John Wheatley gave an upbeat report on the Friends' activities during the past year but with an emphasis upon the progress towards the extension of space in the building, which will allow the improvement and development of library facilities.
He said we have come a long way from our formation to save the Library from closure. Now, in conjunction with the County Library Service, the Friends will play their part in making it one of the best village libraries in the county.
The officers for the coming year are: - Chairman - John Wheatley; Secretary - Bob Calderan; Treasurer - Christine Blackham.
At the close of the meeting, and after refreshments, there was a close fought "Battle of the Books" contest between the Ladies of the Library (Sheila Terry, Val Bourne & Pauline Walters) and the Lads of the Literature Group (Brian Rider, George Hummer & Mike Terry). The latter won by a 'short quote'! The important result was a lot of fun for contestants and audience alike - something that could get AGMs a bad name!

HOOK NORTON BRASS BAND

Click for larger image.

The lovely setting of the gardens of Temple Close, Sibford, was the venue for the annual Vera Jones' Garden party on 3rd August, where the band was engaged to supply a background entertainment. A beautiful summer's day, lit by bright sunshine ensured the success of this happy occasion, the invited guests seated at tables on the terrace to enjoy a delicious tea and listen to the band. The day was tinged with a little sadness, as with Vera planning to move home in the near future, this might be the last time that this event takes place. Pleasant memories of all the many times that Vera has hosted these wonderful parties, always on sunny days, will remain with us for a very long time, and we wish her happiness in her new abode.
With the summer events over, the band look forward to autumn and winter, with the first engagement on 5th October. This will be the annual concert, held in memory of Bill Clarke at St Peter's Church, Hook Norton, beginning at 7pm.
The following week will see us engaged at Marlborough Road Methodist Church, Banbury, for their Music Festival on 11th October. Although the time has not been verified, it is likely to be 7pm. In November, the band will lead the Hook Norton Remembrance Parade and accompany hymns during the Remembrance Service. They will also take part in the evening Remembrance Service at Shutford on the same day.
On Friday 27th November, the band will lead the carol singing for the Katharine House Lights of Love Service at St Mary's Church, Banbury, at 7pm.
Saturday 28th November will be the day of the band's own Prelude to Christmas Concert in Marlborough Road Methodist Church at 7pm. This has become a very popular occasion enjoyed by many. Book the date in your diaries to make sure you are there and watch the press for details.
